The Situation: Reporting Existed, But Trust Did Not
The organization relied on Power BI for executive visibility across key performance indicators—metrics leadership used to evaluate performance and make operational and financial decisions.
Over time, the reporting environment grew organically:

The Approach: Executive KPI Stabilization
The goal was not to rebuild everything. It was to establish a reliable reporting foundation that leadership could trust and teams could maintain.
Step 1 — Align on KPI definitions (before touching DAX)
We started by identifying the KPIs leadership cared about most and documenting:
KPI name and business purpose
Inclusion/exclusion rules
Source systems and tables
Time logic (transaction date vs. posting date; effective dates; fiscal calendars)
Known exceptions and edge cases
Reconciliation expectations (what the KPI should match and when)
This produced a KPI definition set that was:

Step 2 — Establish a “single source of truth” semantic model
Next, we rebuilt the reporting layer around a clean semantic model designed for consistency and scale:
A centralized dataset (semantic model) used by executive reporting
Conformed dimensions (Date, Org, Customer, Product, Region—depending on the business)
Clear, intentional relationships (reducing ambiguity and unexpected filter behavior)
Standard naming conventions for tables, columns, and measures
This step matters because when multiple reports pull from multiple lightly-different datasets, KPI drift is unavoidable.
Step 3 — Rebuild KPI measures as governed, reusable measures
We then implemented KPIs as a controlled measure layer:
One authoritative measure per KPI
Supporting measures as components (base measure → derived measures)
Standard patterns for time intelligence (MTD/QTD/YTD, YoY, rolling periods)
Consistent handling of blanks, zeros, and exceptions
Explicit logic for exclusions and edge cases
The objective was not only correctness but also interpretability: measures that can be understood, reviewed, and maintained.
Step 4 — Validate and reconcile against authoritative sources
